Maspalomas24h Wednesday, March 18, 2026

The operation will take place between March 10 and 22, with increased police presence at the main events of the program.

An attendance of over 500.000 people is expected, reaching its peak during the Grand Parade.

The operation will include specialized units and the collaboration of the Local Police, the Canary Islands Police, Civil Protection and the 10th UIP of Las Palmas

The Department of Festivals and Events of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council announces the postponement and rescheduling of several events of the 2026 Maspalomas International Carnival due to the alert for winds, rain and coastal phenomena, declared by the Government of the Canary Islands due to Storm "Therese", in coordination with the guidelines and recommendations established in the PEIN of the Gran Canaria Island Council and the PEMU of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Following the recommendations of the security and emergency services, and prioritizing at all times the safety of participants, attendees and organization, the City Council has decided to postpone the following events scheduled in the program:

  • Canine Carnival Gala, which was scheduled to take place today, Wednesday the 18th, at 17:00 p.m.
  • Gala Drag, which was scheduled for Thursday the 19th. Despite the change of dates, tickets purchased will remain valid on the day it takes place.
  • Rescue of the Sardine, Tourist Gala, Carnival in the Sun, and the crowd; whose celebration was planned for Friday the 20th.

The National Police have established a comprehensive security operation for the Maspalomas International Carnival 2026, which will take place between March 10 and 22, with the aim of ensuring public safety and the smooth running of the scheduled events.

The operation began on March 10 with the celebration of the opening parade, thus beginning a program that includes galas, contests, parades and festive events that are mainly concentrated in the area around the Yumbo Shopping Center and adjacent areas, as well as in different points of the tourist area.

During the first days of the carnival, important events are held such as the presentation of candidates, the gala to elect the Grand Lady, the children's reign and various family events, in addition to the traditional "mogollones", which bring together thousands of attendees at night.

Throughout the week, the program continues with events such as the school parade, the choreographic festival, the canine carnival competition and the Drag Queen gala, one of the events with the greatest projection and audience attendance.

The police presence will be intensified especially during the events with the largest concentration of people, including the Carnival in the Sun, the Tourist Gala and the Grand Carnival Parade, scheduled for Saturday, March 21, where the largest attendance of all the celebrations is expected, with hundreds of thousands of attendees.

During this massive event, which will take place along various routes in the tourist area, the National Police will reinforce the deployment of operational units, establishing specific prevention, control and incident response measures.

The event will conclude on Sunday, March 22nd with the traditional Burial of the Sardine, an act that will bring the celebrations to an end.

To ensure safety throughout the carnival, the National Police will deploy officers from Citizen Security, the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR), the Judicial Police, the Scientific Police, the Family and Women's Care Unit (UFAM), as well as air resources and reinforcements from other units, also counting on the participation of the 10th Police Intervention Unit (UIP) of Las Palmas, which will collaborate in prevention and maintenance of citizen security at the most crowded events.

Likewise, the operation will be carried out in coordination with the Local Police of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the General Corps of the Canary Islands Police, Civil Protection and other emergency services, establishing a joint effort that will allow an effective response to any incident and guarantee the proper development of all scheduled events.
