This March, the Canary Islands Government took a decisive step to consolidate healthcare security for residents of southern Gran Canaria. In its latest session, the Executive authorized the first extension of the specialized healthcare contract covering the primary healthcare zones of Maspalomas, Mogán, Tirajana, and Vecindario.
This measure, representing an investment of €16,7 million, ensures that patients in this region will continue to receive specialized medical care without interruption for the next year. The decision responds to the need to maintain an essential service in one of the fastest-growing areas of the island. With this agreement, the municipalities of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Mogán will see their healthcare network strengthened within the framework of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS).
The extension, which will take effect on May 1, 2026, and run until April 30, 2027, was processed swiftly by the Regional Ministry of Health to avoid any uncertainty. According to technical reports, the continued healthcare needs in the area make this collaboration essential, as it allows for the integration of existing infrastructure in the region with public resources.
The entity responsible for providing this service will continue its work under the supervision of the Gran Canaria Health Area. The main objective of this contract is to bring specialized medicine closer to the population centers in the south, preventing residents from having to travel long distances to the capital for consultations or specific treatments. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that this extension demonstrates the Government's commitment to equitable access to healthcare, ensuring that all Canary Islanders, regardless of where they live, have access to quality medical coverage close to home in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Mogán, guaranteeing uninterrupted specialized healthcare.
