Maspalomas, key in the 20 years of SPAINSAT: the milestone of Spanish space sovereignty

The Spanish aerospace sector is celebrating a milestone of longevity and operational efficiency this month: the 20th anniversary of the SPAINSAT satellite. This critical asset, essential for Spanish government and military communications, remains fully operational two decades after its launch from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. Within this high-tech ecosystem, the Maspalomas ground station, managed by the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA), reaffirms its fundamental role in national security and the operational efficiency of ground control systems.

The Maspalomas infrastructure was selected from the outset of the project to form part of the ground segment responsible for IoT (In-Orbit Testing) and satellite maintenance operations. According to Juan Carlos Muñoz-Delgado, a European Space Agency executive and project veteran, the technical readiness of the Gran Canaria station was key to ensuring the success of the initial remote commands and IoT bench tests, allowing a project of the magnitude of the Ariane 5 ECA to translate into a real strategic capability for the Ministry of Defense.

This anniversary underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in the defense sector. The success of SPAINSAT belongs not only to Hisdesat, but also to a top-tier engineering consortium that includes firms such as Indra Espacio, GMV, Isdefe, and Hispasat. The Maspalomas base, located in southern Gran Canaria, has proven itself over these two decades to be an irreplaceable geographical and technical hub, consolidating the archipelago as Spain's space "hub" in the Atlantic, capable of sustaining long-duration missions under the strictest safety and environmental protection standards.

The resilience of SPAINSAT, which has exceeded its expected lifespan while maintaining its flight capability, coincides with a period of financial recovery for the municipality that hosts its facilities. San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which recently achieved zero public debt, offers an environment of institutional stability that favors the continued operation of these strategic assets. In a market where satellite surveillance and communication are sovereign assets, Maspalomas remains the indispensable terrestrial link that ensures Spanish technology continues to operate twenty years later.
