European officers will patrol in uniform, integrating themselves into the Citizen Security system established to provide assistance to tourists.
The deployment, part of the European Police Stations Project, aims to guarantee the protection of both residents and foreign visitors during the season.
The National Police have welcomed the new officers from Germany and Romania who, until next April, will be integrated into joint patrols with the National Police in the south of the island.
The event was attended by the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Mr. Anselmo Pestana, who received the officers along with the Chief Superintendent of Police of the Canary Islands, Mr. Jesús María Gómez Martín, and the Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Mr. Ralf Reuter.
Prevention and assistance
This deployment is part of the European Police Stations Project, an international cooperation initiative that allows police officers from different European Union countries to serve in Spain. The foreign officers will patrol in uniform, fully integrating into the established public safety operations.
The main objective of this deployment is to form mixed patrols to assist tourists and residents in their own language in areas of special interest or during significant events. Their specific duties include foot patrols in tourist areas, crime prevention in public spaces, and support in filing complaints through translation and mediation.
Nearly two decades of European Cooperation
The European Police Stations Project originated in 2008, initially with France, under the auspices of the Prüm Treaty, which regulates the posting of police officers between EU member states. Over the years, the program has been successfully consolidated and expanded, resulting in improved service to citizens.
