Alejandro Marichal: “We have a clear priority: to protect people and anticipate any risk situation. We have activated resources and are providing citizens with a safe space to face this situation with guarantees.”
Dimas Sarmiento: “We offer overnight accommodation, food and basic care, aimed at both people experiencing homelessness and those who cannot access their homes due to road closures or isolation caused by weather conditions.”
The Department of Social Services, Social Action and Seniors of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, in collaboration with the Department of Sports and the Red Cross, has activated a temporary shelter in the Tablero Pavilion to assist people who may be affected by the incidents resulting from Storm "Therese".
This measure is adopted following the declaration of an alert for winds, rain and coastal phenomena by the Government of the Canary Islands, and in coordination with the PEIN of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the municipal PEMU.
As explained by the councilor for the area, Dimas Sarmiento, this resource “will be operational from midday today and will initially have capacity for 50 people, with the possibility of expansion depending on needs. The shelter will offer overnight accommodation, meals, and basic care, and is aimed at both people experiencing homelessness and those who cannot access their homes due to road closures or isolation caused by the weather,” the councilor concludes.
The operation is organized in coordination with Civil Protection, Local Police, cleaning services and the Red Cross, guaranteeing not only care for the people in shelters, but also coverage for intervention teams and volunteers.
For his part, the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, emphasized that “this operation responds to a clear priority: protecting people and anticipating any risk situation. We have activated resources, coordinated teams, and provided citizens with a safe space to face this situation with confidence.”
In addition, the space will have specific areas for pets, making it easier for affected people to access the resource under appropriate conditions.
The shelter is initially planned as a short-term resource, operating overnight and until midday the following day, although its continued operation will depend on the weather conditions and the needs identified. Furthermore, the City Council has agreed to share this resource with the municipality of Mogán, thus strengthening inter-municipal coordination in emergency situations.
Due to the activation of the emergency plan, the Pabellón del Tablero will remain closed to the public for sporting activities for the duration of the emergency. The City Council urges citizens to follow safety recommendations and use the available resources responsibly.
