Alejandro Marichal points out that “the City Council is acting with the utmost speed to resolve all the incidents caused by the storm”
For her part, councilwoman Davinia Ramírez justified the urgency: “the section of wall that remains standing shows deterioration that compromises its stability.”
The Urban Planning Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has issued a decree of urgent provisional measures following the partial collapse of a retaining wall at the Águila Playa Apartments, which occurred on the night of March 18. The collapse of the block structure, which affected a section of approximately 20 meters, resulted in debris being scattered across the sand of Playa del Águila, also leaving an exposed slope at risk of further landslides. In response to these events, the council has ordered the immediate sealing off of the area bordering the public maritime-terrestrial domain and the closure of the affected promenade to ensure the safety of residents and beachgoers.
For her part, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Davinia Ramírez, detailed part of the technical report that justifies the municipal order: “It should be remembered that the wall is privately owned, and the council must order its restoration to prevent further problems.” She added that “the reports from municipal and fire department technicians confirm that a real risk still exists, given that the section of wall that remains standing shows deterioration that compromises its stability.” For this reason, the owners have been asked to undertake the necessary actions to restore safety, including draining nearby swimming pools or removing any heavy objects, such as planters, to minimize the load on the slope.
The municipal resolution states that the closure will remain in effect until full safety conditions are confirmed. First Deputy Mayor Alejandro Marichal emphasized the swift action being taken to protect the public interest. “We are carrying out operations at various locations throughout the municipality where incidents have occurred. Therefore, I want to thank the workers and emergency teams who are performing their duties under such challenging conditions.” Marichal also urged residents to “exercise maximum caution, avoid affected areas, and follow official instructions. Meanwhile, we will continue working tirelessly to restore normalcy as soon as possible.”
