Southern Gran Canaria takes a decisive step towards expanding its network of care for the elderly. The Gran Canaria Island Council, through its Department of Territorial Policy and Landscape, has officially announced the opening of the public consultation period for the construction project of a geriatric care center for senior citizens, to be located in the natural setting of the Ayagaures Ravine.
The initiative, originally submitted to the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, seeks to obtain the declaration of public and social interest necessary to operate on rural land. Due to the nature of the land, currently classified as agricultural, the project must undergo rigorous technical and administrative review under the Canary Islands Land and Protected Natural Areas Law.
The future social and healthcare complex will be located on a plot of land in an area known for its tranquility and optimal environmental conditions for the care and residence of dependent individuals. With this infrastructure, the municipality aims to alleviate the growing demand for residential care places in the southern region, where the aging population and demographic pressure require new specialized housing solutions. It will represent a significant investment in social welfare for the residents of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and the entire southern part of the island.
The agreement of the plenary session of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council to urge the Gran Canaria Island Council and the Government of the Canary Islands to "firmly and definitively include" the municipality in the III Socio-Health Infrastructure Plan with the aim of carrying out the construction of a residence for the elderly with a new Day Center in the Maspalomas area is still pending.
