Latvian airline airBaltic confirmed on Tuesday a significant strategic move in the Canary Islands, announcing the addition of a second Airbus A220-300 aircraft permanently based at Gran Canaria Airport. This expansion, projected for the 2026/2027 winter season, definitively consolidates the island as the company's main hub outside its traditional Baltic markets. The decision to double its operating fleet in the destination is a response to the strong results achieved since opening its base in 2023 and growing demand in Central and Eastern European markets.
The centerpiece of this growth is the opening of four new regular routes, adding eight weekly flights to the island's connectivity. The Polish market is the biggest beneficiary of this move, with three new direct connections from Warsaw, Poznan, and Katowice. The fourth route will link Gran Canaria with the Belgian city of Liège. These operations, carried out with state-of-the-art aircraft with a capacity of 148 passengers, reinforce Gran Canaria's role as a destination for high-value tourism from emerging markets seeking alternatives to the traditional flow of Nordic and British visitors.
The influx of seats from Poland and Belgium reduces dependence on mature markets. This strategy aligns with the airline's current operations, which already provide regular service between Gando Airport and Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.
AirBaltic's management emphasizes that basing a second aircraft on the island is a logical step to optimize seasonal connectivity. The efficiency of the Airbus A220-300 allows these medium-haul flights to be covered with a reduced environmental impact and greater passenger comfort, decisive factors for attracting inbound traffic during the winter months in Northern Europe. With this deployment, Gran Canaria not only increases its seat capacity but also positions itself as a key logistics hub in the airline's expansion network into the Western Hemisphere.
