SPAR Gran Canaria reinforces its commitment to sustainability by joining the global Earth Hour movement for the seventh consecutive year, which will be celebrated on Saturday, March 28, in the chain's stores and its three main logistics centers, partially switching off its lights in a worldwide event that is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
This symbolic action by SPAR Gran Canaria aims to raise awareness among its team, its customers and the general public about the importance of protecting the environment and promoting more responsible habits in the face of climate change.
In this regard, between 20:30 p.m. and 21:30 p.m., the electricity supply to the sales areas of the stores, the exterior signs and shop windows, as well as the exterior LED signs that identify the logistics centers located in El Goro and Mercalaspalmas, will be interrupted.
SPAR Gran Canaria is thus intensifying its commitment to a responsible and sustainable business model with a view to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
Furthermore, the company is moving forward with determination by promoting real and visible measures, such as the incorporation of renewable energies, the reduction of food waste, the improvement of energy efficiency in its facilities, the promotion of recycling and the creation of sustainable mobility infrastructure, including charging points for electric vehicles.
In this year's Earth Hour, SPAR Gran Canaria is once again showcasing the creativity and involvement of its team with the launch of two internal initiatives aimed at raising awareness and encouraging participation. One of these is the "Light that Inspires" art competition, open to submissions of photography, painting, drawing, and creative writing, which invites SPAR Gran Canaria staff to see nature with fresh eyes and transform it into art.
In parallel, the competition aimed exclusively at store staff encourages them to capture in a photograph the symbolic moment of the lights being turned off.
These actions reflect a commitment and a firm will to contribute to the well-being of the island and to build a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
