The San Bartolomé de Tirajana Tourism Department reaffirms its commitment to the Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España. The municipality in southern Gran Canaria is another of those represented on the spectacular route map created for the golden anniversary of the island event. The name of Maspalomas, its most popular town, will once again resonate in hundreds of countries across five continents.
Saturday's stage will begin with the 'Maspalomas' special. Competitors from the WRC (World Rally Championship) will tackle this stage, making it one of the most important days of the entire weekend. The route features a dizzying 13.47-kilometer descent, offering sensational views of the Maspalomas dunes and the Atlantic Ocean.
Last year, this same timed stage crowned Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen as winners of the inaugural World Rally Championship event, the Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España. Since then, the Finns have held the record for one of the fastest stages of the entire season. The two-time WRC (World Rally Championship) champions set a time of 6:39.1, with an average speed exceeding 120 km/h.
The first lieutenant of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal, stated, “We are going to sponsor the Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España of the WRC (World Rally Championship), an event that has an international impact of more than 80 million viewers, and in which we want to position Maspalomas as the motor city.”
Germán Morales (President of the Organizing Committee, Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España): “The 50th anniversary edition absolutely had to include a stage in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This municipality boasts the fastest roads in Gran Canaria, as was demonstrated last year. And what better way to incorporate it into the route than with the 'Maspalomas' special stage, one of the most famous in the history of the Rally Islas Canarias – Rally de España. The drivers loved it, and we're fortunate to be able to repeat it this year.”
