Alejandro Marichal: “This project demonstrates that there is talent, that there is interest, and that Canarian wrestling has a future if it is given space, resources, and continuity.”
The local secretary of Coalición Canaria in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal, highlights the results obtained by the young people linked to the Canarian Wrestling project promoted by the organization in 2021, whose fruits are reflected today in the successes achieved in the 2025/2026 season.
In the current season, the cadet team has been proclaimed champion of Gran Canaria in the Cabildo League, with the participation of Adriel Hernández, Daniel Vega, Matar Cissé and Adriel Suárez, consolidating the sporting growth of a youth academy that has been strengthening in recent years.
These results continue the achievements already reached in the 2023/2024 season, when the children's wrestlers Adriel Hernández and Daniel Vega were proclaimed champions of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria League, marking the first competitive milestones of the project.
Adding to these successes is the career of the young wrestler Ainara Mejías, called up by the Gran Canaria team to compete in the Teya Ramos tournament, held in La Palma, where she was proclaimed champion of the Canary Islands.

Marichal emphasizes that "this project demonstrates that there is talent, that there is interest, and that Canarian wrestling has a future if it is given space, resources, and continuity."
The project was launched in 2021 with the aim of reviving and promoting traditional Canarian sports among young people, starting with Canarian wrestling. Since then, work has focused on providing equipment, organizing training sessions, and creating a stable structure to ensure the continuity of the activity.
In its initial phases, the necessary funding was secured to guarantee material resources and a space was set up in the municipal pavilion for the development of classes, which allowed the activity to begin regularly and consolidate the first training groups.
The development of the project has continued in recent years, adapting to existing limitations and in this context, the collaboration with the Unión Sardina Wrestling Club has been crucial for young people to continue training and participating in official competitions in all categories.
Likewise, the training sessions are currently taking place at the CEIP San Fernando school, following the relocation of the activity to ensure better space and continuity.
The Canary Coalition emphasizes that these results consolidate an ongoing line of work that has allowed the creation of a competitive pool in Canarian Wrestling, with projection at the island and regional levels.
