Red Eléctrica expropriates in southern Gran Canaria: takes control of land with 4 million

The deployment of the new 66 kV Mogán substation places Red Eléctrica de España (REE) at the center of a massive expropriation operation in southern Gran Canaria. With a budget of €3.912.449, the national electricity company seeks to safeguard the stability of the system in the island's main economic engine through a double-busbar GIS-type installation. The Directorate General of Energy has activated the declaration of public utility, a legal mechanism that grants REE the right of urgent occupation over an extensive list of private assets and strategic public lands.

The administrative offensive directly impacts the assets of large landowners in the tourism sector. Companies such as Puerto Rico SA, SA Investaurito, and Unión Guanche Catalana are among the affected properties, seeing their land subject to easements and safety zones for the power line's passage. The route not only alters private property; the Gran Canaria Island Council loses full access to waterways in critical ravines such as Mogán, Tauro, and El Cura, while the Mogán City Council sees essential public roads for local mobility disrupted.

In parallel, a second contract worth €143.165 (AT25/003) addresses the project's capillary infrastructure. This technical work includes converting overhead lines to underground and creating transformer substations for the main substation's auxiliary services. Like the 66 kV plant, this complementary project is supported by the Electricity Sector Law to compel the acquisition of right-of-way, consolidating an energy corridor that crosses unproductive land, pastures, and irrigated orchards owned by heirs of the island's long-established families.

The Canary Islands Government has opened a 30-day period for those affected to review the files and submit objections before the occupation becomes irreversible. This window of opportunity is the last recourse for a number of property owners—including heirs of the Del Castillo family and entities such as Destreza Global—whose properties will be fragmented by the Arguineguín-Mogán and Santa Águeda-Mogán double-circuit power lines. The scale of the project, totaling more than four million euros for both phases, confirms the State's priority of strengthening the southern electricity grid at the expense of land ownership.
