Alejandro Marichal: “This international recognition of quality conveys confidence, security and commitment to the care of our beaches”

Yilenia Vega: “With this addition, Maspalomas Costa Canaria consolidates practically its entire tourist coastline under the quality and tourism excellence label.”

Maspalomas Costa Canaria will further solidify its position as a leading destination on the Canary Islands coastline in 2026 with the addition of Las Burras beach to the list of Blue Flag beaches. This new recognition joins those already awarded to El Inglés, Maspalomas, Meloneras, and San Agustín beaches, as well as the Pasito Blanco Marina and the Blue Flag Centers at the Tony Gallardo Park Educational Classroom in the Maspalomas Oasis Reserve and the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve Interpretation Center.

As explained by the Councillor for Tourism, Coastal Care and Management, Yilenia Vega, “with this addition, Maspalomas Costa Canaria will have Blue Flags along practically its entire tourist coastline, placing the municipality among the destinations with the most recognitions in the Canary Islands and reinforcing an image linked to quality, safety, sustainability and tourist excellence.”

Las Burras beach has received this international recognition for the first time, becoming one of the new award-winning beaches in Spain in 2026. The distinction, promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education and managed in Spain by ADEAC, recognizes compliance with demanding criteria related to water quality, accessibility, safety, environmental management and services.

Vega emphasized that “the Blue Flag for Las Burras is the result of the work we have done to improve this beach in terms of accessibility, services, and environmental care.” She also stressed that “this recognition confirms that our ongoing commitment to improving our tourism infrastructure is paying off and that the daily work of the Department of Coastal Care and Management allows us to continue raising the quality of our coastline.”

Furthermore, he added that “Maspalomas Costa Canaria will display Blue Flags along practically its entire tourist coastline, reflecting the effort being made to offer more accessible, better equipped and prepared beaches for both residents and visitors.”
For his part, the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, wanted to acknowledge “the work being carried out by the Department of Coastal Care and Management, which has allowed a beach as family-friendly and representative of the municipality as Las Burras to achieve this distinction for the first time.” Marichal pointed out that “Blue Flags are an international recognition of the quality of our beaches and convey confidence, safety, and a commitment to environmental protection.”

He also added that "these awards strengthen the image of Maspalomas Costa Canaria as a modern, competitive tourist destination committed to the continuous improvement of its public and natural spaces."

For the community, these awards translate into beaches with improved conditions, more accessible services, greater safety, and ongoing attention to the conservation of the coastal environment. For the tourist destination, they represent a calling card based on quality and the care of one of the municipality's main economic and social resources.

The Department of Coastal Care and Management will continue working on the improvement, conservation and responsible promotion of the beaches of Maspalomas Costa Canaria with the aim of further consolidating a sustainable, competitive tourism model linked to the well-being of residents and visitors.
