Southern Gran Canaria in the mirror: accommodation competitiveness hinders the perception of the destination compared to its rivals

The tourism industry in Gran Canaria is undergoing a period of strategic reflection following the publication of the latest market indicators. According to data from the Mabrian Global Perception Index, updated as of May 11, 2026, the island maintains a solid rating of 81,17 points, representing a slight year-on-year increase of 0,9%. However, a detailed analysis of the metrics reveals that the archipelago's economic engine faces structural challenges in the perceived quality of its accommodation facilities, a factor that is beginning to create a gap with its direct competitors in the Mediterranean and its neighboring islands.

Despite the stable climate and public safety, the perception of hotel service remains the weak point of the offering in the south of the island. Gran Canaria registers a Hotel Index of 67,08 points, a figure that is significantly lower than Tenerife's 73,05 points and Antalya's (Turkey) 70,53 points. This gap of almost six points with the neighboring island underscores the urgent need to accelerate renovation plans for apartment complexes and hotels in established areas such as Playa del Inglés and San Agustín. Analysts warn that the high loyalty of the European market could be compromised if the accommodation experience is not aligned with market prices, especially given the aggressive value-for-money policies of the Turkish market.

In contrast, the island stands out as a haven of stability. The Safety Index reaches 94,41 points, the highest level among its competitors, surpassing Mallorca's 92,47 and Tenerife's 93,70. This perception of a safe destination acts as a crucial shield for attracting family and senior tourism in a geopolitical context that remains volatile in other parts of the world. However, the Product Index—which measures satisfaction with the leisure, gastronomy, and cultural offerings—remains at 71,81 points, significantly outperformed by Antalya's diversified offerings (78,63) and slightly by Mallorca (71,55).

The projected international air transport capacity for the coming months offers mixed signals. According to data from Cirium, Gran Canaria will experience a 5,75% increase in international seats for the May-July quarter. Although this figure surpasses the 2,20% growth forecast for Tenerife, it is overshadowed by the operational boom in Antalya, which is expected to see a year-on-year increase of 12,28%. This massive expansion of the Turkish destination suggests a shift in demand from traditional source markets to the Eastern Mediterranean, attracted by a revamped offering and unprecedented connectivity.

For the period from August to October, the trend in Gran Canaria moderated to a growth rate of 3,55%, maintaining a stable number of available beds but without the aggressive marketing seen in other destinations. Dependence on the British and German markets remains the backbone of operations, although the local industry is calling for greater diversification into Eastern European and Nordic markets to offset seasonal fluctuations.

The diagnosis from May 2026 is clear: climate (85,64 points) and safety remain the pillars supporting the model for southern Gran Canaria, but they are not enough to guarantee long-term growth. Future competitiveness will depend on the ability of hotel operators and local authorities to raise the Hotel Index through genuine modernization of services and infrastructure. While destinations like Antalya achieve a superior overall perception (85,49) thanks to a younger hotel sector and competitive prices, southern Gran Canaria must decide whether to commit to service excellence or risk a slow but steady erosion of its international market share.
