The fire is affecting a pile of pruning debris and has not yet spread to forested areas. Firefighters and resources from the Gran Canaria Island Council are working to extinguish the blaze with the support of two helicopters.
The new firefighting equipment proved crucial in containing the fire in the pit of one of the waste treatment plants.
Two shredders have been affected by the flames, one for pruning waste and the other for bulky waste.
The Island Council is coordinating with the municipalities to divert trucks to the North Ecopark tomorrow until the situation returns to normal.
A fire that broke out this Friday at the Juan Grande landfill has generated a large plume of black smoke visible from different points in the south of Gran Canaria and from the GC-1 motorway.
The Emergency Coordination Center received the alert shortly after noon. The fire originated in a pile of pruning debris stored in the area and, according to information provided by the emergency services , has not affected any forested land. The affected area remains contained.
The firefighting efforts involve personnel from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium along with two helicopters and a land unit from the Environment Service of the Gran Canaria Island Council.
The operation also includes officers from the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Local Police and the National Police . A unit from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) has been deployed as a precaution.
The intense smoke generated by the combustion of plant remains is the main visible consequence of the fire and could be observed from several kilometers away.
