The Commonwealth of Municipalities of the North of Gran Canaria and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, through the Ministry of Tourism, celebrate this Sunday, September 24, World Tourism Day with an ambitious program of events and activities that will take place in La Laguna of Valleseco, in a day that includes a fair, musical performances, workshops and a presentation of awards and distinctions that aims to highlight the main tourist attributes of the 11 municipalities that make up the Commonwealth.

The sixth edition of this initiative develops its program in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Gran Canaria, and FENORTE and the 11 municipalities that make up the Commonwealth, and around the motto “Green tourism and investments” chosen by the World Tourism Organization. Its purpose is to raise awareness in the community about the social, cultural, political and economic value of tourism, in addition to exploring ways to develop new projects and investments through which the sector can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“This call now occurs at an important moment within a recovery of the sector in Gran Canaria with tourist arrival data equal to or better than that of 2019 and with an increase of 30% in the sector's global turnover, something that places us Without a doubt among the best years for an industry that has suffered a lot in recent years and from which I believe we have emerged stronger,” said Carlos Álamo, Tourism Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. He added that, “the new client, after the pandemic episode, demands a greater variety in the experiences that he demands from his vacation stay. Many recognize active, rural or sports tourism in mountain or natural areas as one of the main reasons for their vacation and this segment of our clientele is also willing to spend more on their stay, whenever it is in a natural environment. The business opportunities are there and the important thing is that they can be carried out or developed with the highest quality in the northern municipalities, from its mountains to its coast, passing through its cities and its cultural references."

The president of the Association of Northern Municipalities and mayor of Teror, Sergio Nuez, wanted to thank the Valleseco City Council for its collaboration, which has added this event to the program of the Apple Festival, the Livestock Fair and the II San Vicente Equestrian Cup. Ferrer, which guarantees the attendance of thousands of people. “Next Sunday we will present diplomas to the eleven companies and institutions awarded by the Commonwealth this 2023, constituting an example of resistance and excellence whose work and effort is now recognized by the North of Gran Canaria and under the proposed motto we raise the need to seek innovative solutions to support the growth of the tourism sector, based on people, the planet and prosperity,” said Sergio Nuez.

For his part, José Luis Rodríguez, mayor of Valleseco and host of this edition's proposal, explained that Valleseco has great products and business initiatives, such as those linked to apples, but at the same time it is a municipality, like others. of this area, which have “untapped nature.” He added that Valleseco will take the opportunity to promote its products but also to promote ecotourism by representing the largest niche for the future of tourism in Gran Canaria. “We want Valleseco, due to its enormous potential, to be the heart of Gran Canaria's ecotourism proposal and we will commit to taking actions that cause economic synergies in the sector,” he concluded.

The president of the Tourism Commission of the Chamber of Commerce, Santiago de Armas, reported that this proposal allows recognition of the tourism effort of municipalities that are not the usual ones among accommodations but in which there are large tourist establishments linked to the rural area and that It is a very important element for the activity of the Island. “That is why from the Chamber we put maximum interest from the first moment in developing and supporting initiatives like this. The tourist is interested in getting to know the entire island and for this, the town councils are essential for there to be that tourist mobility on the island that is fundamental for our economy,” said De Armas.

Finally, Antonio Medina, president of Fenorte, highlighted that a series of promotional actions and meetings between businessmen included in the agenda of events, in which they will offer catering of local products, and which involves a subsequent tour of the 11 municipalities, with the aim of highlighting products and experiences such as those that the northern coast of Gran Canaria can offer.

The proposal of the Northern City Councils is articulated under the fundamental principles of Sustainable Tourism and aims to establish a boost to the development of sustainable investments from the public and private sectors. The UNWTO itself explains that due to the pandemic, announced foreign investment in the tourism sector fell from 48.500 billion dollars in 2019 to only 12.600 billion in 2020. This sudden and unexpected drop has been felt at all levels of the sector and has been the reason for the interruption of projects designed to advance investing in people, the planet and prosperity.
