New Tourism Sustainability Plan 'ImpulsaMaspalomas'

'ImpulsaMaspalomas' seeks to improve the diversification of tourism markets and products, modernize the destination and incorporate sustainability as a basic principle

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has published, through the Island Energy Council, the tender for the technical assistance that will be responsible for developing the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan 'ImpulsaMaspalomas', endowed with 5,5 million euros of European funds Next Generation, which seeks to improve the diversification of tourism markets and products, modernize the destination and incorporate sustainability as a basic principle. 

 

The contract budget amounts to 400.000 euros and interested companies can submit their offers until February 14. The objective of this competition is the creation of the technical office that will be in charge of coordinating and programming the actions of the 'ImpulsaMaspalomas' Plan, with environmental restoration projects, signage, sensorization, renewables, waste separation, training and electric mobility, among others. . The technical office will work for a period of two and a half years, although an extension of another four semesters is contemplated, until the development of this plan is completed.

 

The Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Raúl García Brink, pointed out that “this technical office will have the key responsibility of assuming the full management of the entire program, coordinating its execution and development in the different axes. that make it up, as well as optimize the execution of the different subprojects or lines of action. In this way, we will significantly lighten the workload of the different institutions involved.”

 

García Brink also recalled that, in addition to the Insular Energy Council, in charge of coordinating the Tourism Sustainability Plan, the Ministry of the Environment is involved in it; Gran Canaria Tourism; the Society for the Development of Telecommunications of Gran Canaria; the Maspalomas Consortium and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, as well as the Island Energy Council itself, which will carry out different tasks. 

 

Performances included in the 'ImpulsaMaspalomas'

 

The general objective of 'ImpulsaMaspalomas' is to improve the resilience capacity of the tourist area of ​​Maspalomas Costa Canaria in the short and medium term, mainly through the enhancement of the existing natural heritage and the tourist resource of the dunes as a backbone. . Through these actions, the green reputation of the island's most important destination is improved through a proposal in which sustainability and digital transformation are combined to enrich its tourism products.

 

The actions are structured around four axes: green and sustainable transition, improvement of energy efficiency, digital transition and competitiveness.

 

The Tourism Sustainability Plan contemplates actions such as the installation of photovoltaic panels in parking lots and public infrastructure on beaches, the reduction of light pollution and water consumption, the installation of charging points for electric vehicles or the construction of a bicycle lane. on the Meloneras promenade.

 

The environmental restoration of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Reserve will also be carried out, waste management will be improved with special attention to the beaches and urban drainage will be carried out to reduce and treat stormwater runoff in the Maspalomas Pond environment. . In addition, the use of renewable energy sources will be promoted in infrastructures that provide tourist services and the saturation of the destination will be reduced through the use of sustainable mobility.

 

Likewise, actions are incorporated to promote the digital transition through the installation of signage and smart tourist information points, the improvement of sensors, through the deployment of a network of anthropic, climatic and environmental sensors and the installation of information screens. LED lights in the busiest areas to raise awareness among tourists.

 

In addition, actions will be carried out to support small accommodation establishments and commerce, leisure and restaurant companies to improve their business models towards more solid and sustainable models and the creation of new complementary tourism products.

 

In this sense, work will be done on the musealization of the viewpoints, observation spaces and interpretation centers associated with natural and historical resources; recruiting guides/educators to improve interpreted tourist visits; the promotion of sports practice services and tourism entrepreneurship based on new products or the promotion of the promotion of km 0 products and local crafts oriented to tourism.
