This represents the first step to transform the future exhibition center into a benchmark in sustainability in the sector at an international level.
Infecar, Gran Canaria Fair, continues to advance in the definition of its future venue and this Friday, February 2, has presented the certification of the Infecar deBreeam® ES Urban Planning Master Plan strategy, which demonstrates the will to configure a venue that aspires to have sustainability as its backbone.
Raúl García, Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria; Javier Torralba, director of Breeam® Spain; and Juan Palop, editor of the Infecar Master Plan, have revealed the details of this sustainability strategy, which represents the first step to transform the future exhibition center into a benchmark in sustainability in the international fair sector.
“This strategy that we present today is quite unique in terms of its configuration because, since its inception, it has been orchestrated with highly demanding processes and criteria that, in the future, I predict will be able to serve as a pilot or mirror of other constructions in the Canary Islands. ", stated Raúl García, Javier Torralba, director of Breeam® Spain, the most technically advanced method of evaluation and certification of sustainability in buildings and world leader in the number of certified projects since its creation in 1990, has pointed out “Today Infecarse becomes the first exhibition institution in Spain to achieve the initial certification of Breeam® ES Urbanismo.”
Thus, the planning of the new fairgrounds offers the opportunity to go beyond the objective of building a competitive and efficient fairgrounds. This is an opportunity to also contribute to the improvement of the social, environmental, urban and economic environment of the upper part of the city.
The editor of the Infecar Master Plan, Juan Palop, has pointed out that “this is what regenerative urbanism consists of, as opposed to sustainable urbanism. It does not consist of doing the least possible damage, but rather of betting on regenerating living conditions wherever it intervenes. This is, therefore, a planning plan for a fairground but it is also a plan for a community, a city.”

From the environmental aspect, innovative solutions based on nature are included, such as zero-carbon urban planning in which the fairgrounds, far from emitting CO2 and polluting gases, will instead serve as infrastructure for capturing CO2. “Rather than emitting little, we are committed to capturing and contributing to regenerating the atmosphere,” he pointed out.
In addition, it is planned to produce twice as much renewable energy as is necessary to operate the facility, “thus opening the opportunity to share surplus energy with neighboring communities.”
In relation to this initial certification, Palop has emphasized “the joint work we have carried out with Breeam® ES, which has been in charge of auditing all the aspects that shape this Master Plan and in which we work hard to obtain the maximum possible distinction.”
The opportunities of the sustainable construction sector in the Canary Islands, under debate
Yesterday, Thursday, February 1, a workshop dedicated to professionals in the construction sector was held in Infecar, one of the key actors in the paradigm shift in which we find ourselves.
Rethinking the way in which open spaces, infrastructure and buildings are built and used is essential to achieve this sustainable future, as pointed out by María Paz, head of Urban Planning at Breeam® ES, and in charge of explaining the 'Challenges, challenges and opportunities for sustainable construction in the Canary Islands. What to measure and how when we talk about sustainability'.
“We are moving towards a more sustainable future in which pollution levels are reduced, we are committed to the circular economy and our impact on the environment is mitigated, and with the Breeam® methodology we have the opportunity to carry it out at our fingertips. ", he pointed.
