San Fernando Day celebrated with more than 1000 kilos of mackerel and 70 kilos of wrinkled potatoes

MASPALOMAS24H Thursday, May 30, 2024

More than 1.000 kilos of Arguineguín mackerel, 70k of wrinkled potatoes, 100k of gofio pellets and 40 liters of mojo were served today to celebrate the Big Day of the Festivities in honor of San Fernando. More than 2.500 people lined up to taste the delicious menu, in an event that already has more than 40 years of tradition and where there are now two generations participating in the preparation, cooking and serving of the dishes. The Councilor for Celebrations and Events of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council thanked the more than 30 volunteers, mostly residents of El Poblado de Maspalomas, for “the desire, effort and affection with which they prepare this day” and He celebrated that “the children of the neighbors who carry out this work have joined in, since with them we are guaranteed generational change.”

On this day, all the volunteers had in mind Suso Guerra, a resident of El Poblado who recently died and who was a regular in the organization of this day, “in honor of him is the celebration of this day” commented some of the participants. . Along with the smell of charcoal and roasted mackerel, the Solajero festival by Paco Guedes and his son Apolo, who not only made the wait more pleasant but also encouraged everyone to dance, sounded on the stage installed next to the CEIP San Fernando. to lower the food, until mid-afternoon.

Before this, and as tradition dictates, the Mass and Procession took place in honor of San Fernando 'El Chico', which together with the image of the Virgen del Carmen toured the streets of El Poblado de Maspalomas accompanied by the Municipal Corporation that headed by the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez; the first deputy mayor, Alejandro Marichal; and the Councilor for Celebrations and Events, Yilenia Vega. The band of drums and bugles, Little Estefanía, was in charge of marking the passage of the procession where the women carried the image of the Virgin of Carmen and the neighbors, the image of San Fernando El Chico.

It should be noted that this celebration has a double aspect, and it is that not only the Day of the patron saint of Maspalomas is celebrated but also the Day of the Canary Islands, so devotion and tradition are intertwined. It is a day of family and neighborhood reunion that is deeply rooted among the inhabitants of the town who invite their closest friends to share this traditional lunch of the San Fernando Festival.
